Therefore, the present study aimed to prospectively determine whether the anti-inflammatory capacity of HDL associates with incident CVD events in a general population cohort when taking established CVD risk factors into account. 16 Whether a similar prospective association exists in the general population is not currently known. In agreement with this hypothesis, a small study in patients who experienced acute myocardial infarction showed that a lower anti-inflammatory capacity of HDL relates to a higher incidence of new major cardiac events. Given that another key biological role of HDL is protection against inflammation, 14 and given the inflammatory nature of the atherosclerotic process, 15 anti-inflammatory properties of HDL might have particularly high clinical significance. 10–12 However, cholesterol efflux still tracks considerably with HDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein (apo) A1 levels, 10–13 while an HDL function metric that is less dependent on the plasma HDL cholesterol concentration would be more interesting, both from the perspective of intervention and from the perspective of risk prediction. 8, 9 It has been demonstrated that HDL cholesterol efflux capacity is inversely associated with incident CVD events in the general population independent and even irrespective of HDL cholesterol levels. 7 A much-researched functionality of HDL particles is its ability to mediate cholesterol efflux from macrophage foam cells, the first step in the atheroprotective reverse cholesterol transport pathway. 2–5 Together with genetic studies that also show that lifelong low or high levels of HDL cholesterol do not relate as anticipated to CVD outcomes, 6 focus has shifted from HDL cholesterol as a biomarker to the measurement of HDL function metrics. Adding HDL anti-inflammatory capacity improved risk prediction by the Framingham risk score, with a model likelihood-ratio statistic increase from 10.50 to 20.40 ( P=0.002).Īlthough circulating levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol are inversely associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in the general population, 1 outcomes of pharmacological intervention trials aiming to increase plasma HDL cholesterol have been disappointing and largely negative. When combining these 2 HDL function metrics in 1 model, both were significantly and independently associated with incident cardiovascular disease in a fully adjusted model (efflux: OR per 1 SD, 0.74 P=0.002 anti-inflammatory capacity: OR per 1 SD, 0.66 P<0.001). HDL anti-inflammatory capacity was significantly lower in cases compared with controls (31.6% versus 27.0% P0.05). HDL anti-inflammatory capacity was not correlated with HDL cholesterol or hsCRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein). However, in 1985, it rose again from its ashes, this time under the auspices of EMI Records and its headman Bruce Lundvall. The documentary goes no further into the label´s history, its ensuing years of decline left unaddressed. Only at the burial did Lion find out that his friend had a family life, sharing it with a Black woman and her children. As united as they were musically, the partners led separate lives. To Lion’s vinegar, Wolff was the oil, the quiet one who hardly uttered a word to the musicians, spending his time clicking his shutter and turning out shots for the inimitable record covers created by their graphics man Reid Miles. He dealt head on with the musicians and urged them on in his broken English, insisting when necessary that It must schwing! Yet, in 1965, he surprised everyone by selling his interests to Liberty Records, leaving his partner at the helm of the business until his sudden demise six years later. True to his name, Lion was the more imposing of the two. Other witnesses include critic Dan Morgenstern, label historian Michael Cuscuna and Blue Note’s legendary recording engineer Rudy van Gelder in his last interview prior to his death in 2016.įor all of the opinions expressed, this feature never loses sight of its two main protagonists. Several former Blue Note artists share their insights on camera, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Ron Carter topping the list, with Benny Golson, Lou Donaldson, Charles Tolliver and vocalist Sheila Jordan adding their own takes. There are plenty of first-hand accounts too, starting by Lion himself, interviewed shortly before his passing in 1987. The animated film sequences that serve to illustrate historical facts and anecdotal stories enhance the documentary considerably. From their roots in classic jazz, they were now modernists, shaping that idiom for the next 20 years and issuing an unmatched catalogue of reference recordings in American jazz. In 1947, the budding producers turned over a new leaf after giving a first recording break to a pianist unlike any other, Thelonious Monk. Scraping their pennies together, they lure into a studio a couple of older Black musicians who had fallen through the cracks. And so I said, ‘I never want you to do anything you don’t want to do, but I do want you to challenge yourselves so we can challenge the audience.’” Mitchell told IndieWire about filming the cult classic, “Certainly, a lot of films had used sex, but they were pretty grim, and I wanted something more fun and funny, but still emotionally deep. I never got a truly good look at her, but I did catch a couple drags from a distance. ![]() As I proceeded to deliver the rest of the block, I strained my neck every time I had a direct line of vision to see this girl attend to her phone conversation and her cigarette while relaxing on the porch. I was only in the presence of this greatness for a brief moment, but it was definitely my first interactive and most upclose sighting of a cute early teen smoker girl in my life up to that point. In the other hand, she held a freshly lit all-white cigarette.īefore I had time to fully process what I was seeing, the girl aggressively held out her free hand and waved me towards her so that she could take possession of the mail. In one hand, next to her ear, was a cordless telephone with which she was talking to her friend. But just a couple of days later her image changed dramatically as I ascended the cement stairs to her house and saw girlie sitting outside on the porch. I remember thinking she was a cute little girl who would probably be every poor boy’s dream in a few short years. I was delivering this route for two weeks and at one point took note of a cute 12-13ish blond girl living in one of the homes who was stepping outside and heading to mom’s car. Putting things in context, Madison Avenue is an ironic reference as, in stark contrast to the posh image of New York City’s Madison Avenue shopping district, the Madison Avenue in my hometown is right in the heart of what would pass as the slums of town….very gritty and working-class. But one August afternoon delivering on Madison Avenue, I would get something even better. Every loop of mail that I delivered, there was always the hope that I would stumble into a pretty young woman or college girl waiting behind the door with a smoldering cigarette between her fingers. The job allowed me opportunities to observe female smoking in a way I hadn’t up to that point, having always shied away from crowds in high school and college and not gotten in on much of the comparatively wide-open smoking culture that existed in the era. I had my first “real job” in the summer of 1998, following my sophomore year of college, when I was a mail carrier in my hometown. ![]() Thus, the researchers expect this research will be useful for the other researchers who are eager to obtain more knowledge about semantic field.
